Proven Faith..... Dr. Charles Stanley

 Proven Faith

Dr. Charles Stanley

1 Peter 1:3-9

Faith is perhaps the most central element in the Christian life because it is the means by which we enter into salvation. But that’s only the beginning. From then onward, our faith—or lack of it—shapes our lives and determines what happens to us when the winds of adversity blow. Some Christians never lose their footing even in hurricane-force winds, but others are toppled by the slightest gust. To understand why this is true, we need to examine the source of our faith.

Inherited faith: If you grew up in a Christian home, you probably adopted some of the beliefs of your parents. This kind of godly foundation is a wonderful gift from the Lord, but eventually, each person must assume responsibility for his own beliefs.

Textbook faith: The Bible is the ultimate guide for establishing our beliefs. But that’s not the only source of influence. Books, preachers, teachers, and friends all impact our convictions. Our theology may in fact be sound, but faith is merely mental acceptance until it’s put to the test.

Proven Faith: Only when we trust the Lord through the fires of adversity will we have faith that can stand. It is no longer based on what others have told us or what we’ve accepted as true but on our firsthand experience of His faithfulness.

To evaluate your faith, consider how you react to adversity. Do you cling to the Lord or get angry at Him? Is your attitude one of rejoicing because He’s making you more like His Son, or are you bitter? No one can escape adversity, but those with proven faith will benefit from it.

Strength in Joy..... Craig Denison

 Strength in Joy

Craig Denison

Weekly Overview:

As children of the Most High God, we are to be marked by contagious, unceasing joy. Through the Holy Spirit we have access to an unending supply of joy that comes from the wellspring of restored relationship with our heavenly Father. God longs to fill us with his joy that we might live the abundant life Jesus died to give us. He longs to make us children fashioned in the image of our Father that we might share his unending joy to a world without hope. May you discover the greater portion of joy available to you through the Spirit as you encounter the heart of your Father this week.

Scripture:“And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” >Nehemiah 8:10

Devotional:

The strength that comes from the joy of restored relationship with our heavenly Father is unlike any other strength we can find in ourselves. The joy of the Lord is unceasing, unwavering, and powerful. It comes from a place of internal peace with God rather than external, fleeting circumstances. And it is wholly available to us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ our Lord. May we be a people marked by the joy of our heavenly Father as we allow God to come and fill our lives with his powerful presence today.

Nehemiah 8 gives revelation on God’s desire to establish joy at the foundation of following him. In Nehemiah 8, the nation of Israel had just rebuilt the walls around Jerusalem and were learning again what it is to live in obedience to the word of God. As Ezra opens God’s word, the people fall on their faces in mourning and shame for their disobedience. And in response to their tears, Nehemiah proclaims to God’s people, “Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). God desires for joy to be at the foundation of relationship with him. He longs for us to be a people marked by the joy that can only come from restored relationship with our Creator. His joy is to be our strength.

The true picture of strength in the earth is total joy that comes from dependence on our heavenly Father. Psalm 16:8-11 says, “I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”  It’s only in utter dependence that the Lord is able to fully work in and through us. It’s only in setting him always before us that we will be fully strengthened by the joy that comes from relationship with him. And it’s only in continually seeking his presence that we will discover the fullness of joy and pleasure meant to be our portion as his children.

God wants to be your strength today. He wants to root and ground you in his unshakable joy. He longs to guide you to the still waters and do a mighty work in your heart to increase your capacity for his joy. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” May you discover the powerful medicine of joy today as you enter into a time of guided prayer.

Guided Prayer:

1. Meditate on the strength that comes from joy alone. Allow Scripture to fill you with a desire to have more of the joy available to you in God.

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” >Romans 14:17

“Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” >Nehemiah 8:10

“I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:8-11

2. What care, thought, or burden is keeping you from the fullness of joy today? What area of your life do you need to surrender in order to live in total dependence on your heavenly Father? Where is God wanting to fill you with his abundant joy today?

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” >Proverbs 17:22

3. Surrender every area of your life to the capable hands of God and enter into the joy that comes from dependent relationship with your Creator. Rest in his peaceful presence and allow him to fill you with joy overflowing. Ask him to guide you into a more joyful life and to free you from whatever bonds would keep you from experiencing all he has for you.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” Psalm 28:7

“For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” - Isaiah 55:12

May Paul’s prayer to the Colossians be your pursuit today as you seek to live in the fullness of life Jesus died to give you:

“May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy.” - Colossians 1:11

It Will Pierce Our Souls, Whether We Like It or Not..... BINU SAMUEL

It Will Pierce Our Souls, Whether We Like It or Not

BINU SAMUEL

“Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 31:12 (NIV)

I think I was 8. My sister and I were getting ready to play outside when my mom warned us, “Billy Graham will be on at 7 p.m.”

Ugh … I knew what that meant.

Our playtime would be cut short. We’d need to finish our homework, shower and eat dinner early because at 7 p.m. we were watching the nationally televised Billy Graham Crusade, whether we liked it or not.

“It’s so boring. We’re just kids,” I would complain. But my complaining never worked.

To prove my point, I maintained my “I’m bored” outward composure. But about 10 minutes into the sermon, Billy Graham’s simple gospel message had a way of seeping into my heart and piercing my young soul. Every time.

Thirty years later …

It’s Thursday, my usual day off from work. My kids are small, and we’re headed to my parents’ house, a 45-minute drive. As one of my favorite preachers comes on the radio, my kids begin to bellyache. “Oh, Momma, can’t we just listen to music? This is so boring.”

I reassure them it’ll be over in 15 minutes, and then they can listen to their music.

They quiet down but look incredibly bored. One even appears to doze off. I can’t help but wonder if I’m doing the right thing. Am I expecting too much from my children at such a young age? After all, they are just kids.

In Deuteronomy Chapter 31, Moses knew his days of leading the Israelites were coming to an end, and he would soon be passing the baton to his successor, Joshua. So Moses gave the entire community, children included, a few final instructions.

“Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. Their children, who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” (Deuteronomy 31:12-13, NIV)

If anyone understood a child’s ultra-short attention span, it was God, the creator of the human mind. Nevertheless, God wanted children to hear the reading of the law. He wanted them to glean whatever they could glean from the Word of God — and the same is true today.

About a decade has passed since those early trips to my parents’ house. But every Thursday when the boys are off for summer vacation, we still try to head that way.

Now, my younger son is in the driver's seat as the radio plays.

“Momma? Do you still like this preacher?”
“Yeah, I do,” I answer. "He’s one of my favorites.”
“Mine, too. I listen to his podcast on my way to school. He has such a soothing voice.”

Shut. The. Front. Door.

You mean all those years, they were listening? All that bellyaching, yet something actually seeped in?

Friends, God promises us that His Word will not return void. (Isaiah 55:11) And what we do for the Lord is never in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58)

I feel like someone out there needs to hear this:
Keep at it, mom.
Keep at it, faithful friend.

The seeds you plant will reap a harvest. The Bible is God’s Word. It may not seem like anyone is listening, but keep at it. God’s Word has a way of seeping into our hearts and piercing our souls … whether we like it or not. (Hebrews 4:12)

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for pursuing us. We pray for our loved ones who may not know You or even want to know You. We ask that You would pierce their hearts through Your Word as You have pierced our hearts. Thank You for Your sweet love, which draws us to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Biblical Ways to Combat Anxiety and Depression..... By: Amanda Idleman

Biblical Ways to Combat Anxiety and Depression (Isaiah 61:3b)

By: Amanda Idleman

Today’s Bible Verse: “They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” - Isaiah 61:3b

There are so many factors that influence our mental health, some biological, other times our circumstances or past trauma can steal our joy. When we find ourselves stuck in a dark mental place, it’s important to seek out treatment from medical professionals as well as taking the time to find support in other ways.

There are some lessons we can take from the bible on how to help keep ourselves out of dark emotional places. One thing is for sure, God wants to take your pain and bring you peace and joy! God wants to give you beauty rather than ashes and joy instead of mourning!

1. Keep Our Lives in Balance

Ecclesiastes 4:6 says, “Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.”

We live in a two handfuls culture. Rarely do we ever see an opportunity and say we should pass because we desire tranquility over success.

Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, is thought to be one of the wisest people to ever have lived. He saw that when our lives become all about work, toil, chasing, and getting after more peace is harder to find.

From the start of creation, God set the precedent that we need rest. When God set aside the seventh day to rest, he wasn’t doing this because he just couldn’t handle making one more new creature, God did this to send a clear message to humanity. He was telling us that we are people that have been created with the need for balance.

We have been made to work, create, and produce. We have been crafted to desire purpose and meaning to our days but also we have not been given endless strength. Rest is key to keeping our lives in balance.

2. Avoid Comparison

Oh my, how hard it is to avoid comparing ourselves to others in our culture! Social media, while has many beautiful uses, also has a way of making it seem as though we are never able to measure up to the next person we scroll by’s life. The “highlights” we post can leave the viewers of our accounts feeling inadequate but those handpicked snippets never tell the whole story.

Galatians 6:4-5 says, “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.”

God has called each of us to our own unique stories. When we strive to  be or do things that aren’t ours to carry we miss out on all that God has for us.

When we own our burdens and invite God to work in both our weaknesses and strengths God is able to do immeasurably more with our lives than we could ask or think! No need to feel bad any longer when we see someone else’s win…we can actually just selflessly applaud them because we are secure with the knowledge that God has placed you where you are on purpose!

3. Find Healthy Ways to Process Our Emotions

God has created us to be emotional people. With every event that we witness in our lives we respond with emotion. It is just how we were made.

Healthy processing of our emotions is done best in a safe community. This is why therapy is so helpful for people! It’s why support groups are so powerful to attend when we are walking through a tough season. If we had the ability to work out the feelings, lies, and truth in our own heads then therapists, pastors, counselors, and your friends would be out of a job.

We see this right at the start of creation. In the beginning, the first problem that faces mankind is isolation, not sin. Genesis 2:18 says, “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” After every other step of creation God paused to say that it was good until he realized that Adam was all alone. It was the first time God said wait… something is missing here!

We need each other and we need God. Don’t be afraid to bring all your brokenness to the Lord. He desires to hear and comfort us when we are battling negative emotions. Find a trusted, faith-filled person to confide in when your mind gets overwhelmed. Allow them to help you to find the right way to process your emotions and let them keep you accountable for your actions.

Be encouraged that God knows our struggles empowers us to find healing from all the pain this world brings into our lives. That is the whole message of the Gospel… that God so loved us he came to save us. There is no shame in our struggle. God knows we are desperately hopeless without him and wants us to partner with him to find freedom from the chains of mental anguish that trouble the hearts of all people.

Cold Soup..... by Ryan Duncan

 Cold Soup

by Ryan Duncan

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. – Mark 12:30

A while back, some friends and I went out to lunch at a nearby restaurant. Now, I’m not much of an adventurous eater, but that day I decided to try something new and ordered a soup called, “Vichyssoise.” I now know that Vichyssoise is a thick soup made of puréed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream, and chicken stock. Also, it’s traditionally served cold. Maybe I’m just not cultured enough to appreciate this unique delicacy, but in my opinion, cold soup tastes horrible.

After one spoonful I was trying to find a creative way to spit it out without my friends noticing. The meal did make me think though, about what the Bible says about cold and lukewarm Christians.

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth. - Revelation 3:15-16

It’s funny how a bowl of soup can make you reflect on your life as a Christian. As I mulled over my actions in the past year, I realized how far away from God I had really moved. I had let my faith become a daily routine, like brushing my teeth or doing laundry, I had let my passion grow cold. God wants us to change the world, if only in our own small ways. Keep your heart and mind centered on Christ, don’t let yourself grow cold.

Intersecting Faith and Life: Have you let your passion for Christ grow cold? Take some time to consider.

A Prayer to Know God More Deeply..... By Tiffany Thibault

Prayer to Know God More Deeply

By Tiffany Thibault

“Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know Him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.” - Hosea 6:3

These words from our verse are exhorting us to know the Lord. These words are written with longing, with persuasion and with passion, for this sentence ends with an exclamation mark! These words are speaking of a hunger to know more of the Lord. How well do you know the Lord? How spiritually hungry are you to know Him more and more each new day?

The verse continues by encouraging us to press on to know Him. The meaning of the word “press” from Hebrew means “to pursue, to chase”. Can you say that you are pursuing knowing the Lord more? Can you say that you are chasing after a deeper relationship with the Lord?

Pursuing and chasing the Lord will help us to know Him more. As our understanding of the Lord increases, our faith grows deeper. This is not something we can see as easily as the sun's schedule, or the seasons change.

The truth is that as you chase after knowing the Lord, the more you begin to see how much more that you need Him, and the more you realize how much more you want to know about Him. Chasing after the Lord stirs a deeper hunger in your soul and all you want is more of Jesus.

As you pursue the Lord, you begin to see how He works in ways you didn’t see before. You will begin to have greater faith knowing that He will act in your life, and that He is at work in every one of your circumstances.

There is an amazing promise laid out for us in this verse. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.

Sunrise, sunset, spring, summer, fall, winter, rain, snow, wind and storms. Year after year these continue in their pattern. The sun's daily journey can be precisely clocked. The seasons each begin on a specific calendar day. Storms can be tracked to determine their course and their strength. These things are sure. These things do not change. These are things that we can see with our eyes.

We can have peace and joy knowing that the Lord will respond to us, whether we can see it or not! Our needs and concerns are in God’s perfect timing. The more we press on to know Him, the more we can trust Him with every detail of our lives. Press on, pursue the Lord more. He is waiting for you. He loves you and He longs to draw close to you. The energy you spend pressing into Him will be the best part of your life, guaranteed!

Oh Lord,

Please help me this day. Give me eyes to see how you are at work in every one of my circumstances. Lord, give me perseverance to increase my understanding of you. Give me a hunger to read your Word and to seek to know you more each day. Just as the dawn comes with its exact precision, help me to trust that You will also move in my life, in your perfect timing and in your beautiful way.

In Your Name I pray, Amen.
