Is the Battle of Armageddon around the Corner?

Is the Battle of Armageddon around the Corner?

  • Dr. Roger Barrier
  • Dear Roger,
Our small group had a long discussion about the Battle of Armageddon. One thing we tried to discuss with intelligence was the Battle of Armageddon and the maneuvering of the nations in battle for the end times. We wondered where and how Jesus fit in with the Battle? Will America be involved? We read Jesus’ Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24 where He describes the times and the signs preceding the Second Coming. With wars and rumors of wars, and earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and genocide occurring all over the earth, do you believe that these things are being fulfilled today?
Could you please shed some light on this for us? We would really appreciate it.
    Sincerely, Christopher
    Dear Christopher,
I would be delighted to give you some thoughts regarding the Battle of Armageddon; but, with several caveats.
    1. God has not chosen to give us all of the details regarding the end times. In other words, no one can answer this question exactly, not with absolute certainty.
    2. I’ve been fascinated by this study for years. I’m going to present to you the best picture I can give of what the Bible does say about the Battle of Armageddon and the events leading up to it.
    3. I will be sharing with you a simple summary of the events as I see them.
    4. I am taking a literal perspective as if these events are indeed still in our future. This is based on Ezekiel 37
    5. If I could meet with your small group, we could expand this answer of mine to a two- or three-hour teaching. Since we can't, I hope this summary will at least answer some of your questions while I know it will bring up many new ones.
6. I have made a lot of assumptions in my description of Armageddon and the events preceding it. Others will look at my answer and disagree with most everything I've written. Nevertheless, what I present to you is something I’ve worked on for several decades. Hopefully, you’ll find my perspective interesting and helpful to your group.

Battle of Armageddon Scriptures

“Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.
“Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”
Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon" – Revelation 16:13-16

Old Testament End Times Prophecy of Armageddon

Napoleon called the geographical Armageddon the greatest natural battlefield in the world.
But the fact is that no one knows exactly where the battlefield is located. Most likely the Valley extends for some 15 to 20 miles north and south in the northern part of present-day Israel.
The Book of Daniel provides some of the foundational truths that make up any study of the end times.
Daniel 2: God's plan for the Gentile nations begins with King Nebuchadnezzar and follows the historical sequence of human governments from him to a 10-nation confederacy during the end times which occupies the area of the old Roman Empire. The Antichrist will gain control of these nations and, after guaranteeing Israel’s peace and security, will break that treaty 3 ½ years later and will launch an attack against Israel.
Daniel 9: God's plan of 490 years for Israel predicts to the very day on April 6, 30 A.D when the Messiah will enter Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. This time period begins with the decree from Persia to rebuild and restore Jerusalem. This time period lasts for 483 years. Hence, there is one seven year-time-period left.
On Palm Sunday, God stopped the prophetic clock with seven years to go. The clock will restart when the Antichrist makes his peace treaty with Israel. The first 3 ½ years are peaceful between the ten-nation coalition in Israel. Although, during this time, Israel may be under attack from Rosh - a nation that lies due north of Jerusalem. The Antichrist breaks the treaty after 3 ½ years and then all hell breaks loose with what is called the time of Great Tribulation. This is the time of:

The seven seals of man's destruction upon himself,
The seven trumpets of Satan's destruction on mankind,
And finally, the seven bowls of God's wrath which are poured out on mankind.
Now, at what point during this time will The Rapture occur? Some argue at the beginning of the seven years, some argue in the middle of the seven years, and some argue at the end of the seven-year Tribulation. You can make your own choice. Remember that the Rapture need not necessarily be tied to the seven years at all. It may occur before the seven years' time clock even begins.
Revelation 16:17-21: The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. …The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath. Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found. From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail, because the plague was so terrible.
"It is done" is followed by a great earthquake. This reminds me of the words of Christ on Calvary, "It is finished." Jesus statement there was followed by a great earthquake, too.
We must realize here that every man or woman stands in the face of one of these two statements. If a person doesn't want, “It is done" at Calvary, then he or she will hear "It is done" at Armageddon. Let's look at the seven events that will take place during the Battle of Armageddon.

1. Ezekiel's Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones

Ezekiel 37: The vision of dry bones coming together to make a skeleton and being covered with flesh and then coming alive is a prediction of the Jewish people coming together from places all over the world to become a living, breathing soul. This prediction became a reality in 1948 with Jews all over the world returning to Israel and establishing a nation.

2. The Gog and Magog Invasion into Palestine

Ezekiel 38:1-4: The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal; prophesy against him and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[b] Meshek and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army—your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords.
Magog, Mesheck, and Tubal were all sons of Jepheth (the son of Noah) who migrated to the area of modern-day Russia - (Genesis 10:2-3).
Magog means the "Chief Prince" or "Prince of Rosh." Rosh is the old root word for the name Russia. Meshek corresponds to the old name for the capital of Western Russia, which is today the city of Moscow. Tubal was the ancient name of one of the dominant Asiatic provinces of Russia.
Ezekiel 38:15: "You will come from your place in the far North (the Hebrew word means "the uttermost part of the North"). What's north of Jerusalem? Moscow. What is further north than Russia? Nothing.
Ezekiel 38:5-6: identifies the rest of the participants of the Battle of Armageddon.
- Persia is a reference to modern-day Iran which changed its name in 1935.
- Cush describes present day Ethiopia and the black nations of Central Africa.
- Put is Libya, located in northern Africa.
- Gomer are the people who settled in Germany.
- Beth Togarmah is Asia Minor and Turkey.

3. Magog's Decision to Invade Israel

Ezekiel 38:14-16: “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In that day, when my people Israel are living in safety, will you not take notice of it? You will come from your place in the far north, you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty army. You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud that covers the land. In days to come, Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.”
In other words, this occurs at a time when Israel dwells in peace...When is that? Probably during the first 3 ½ years before the Antichrist breaks his treaty with Israel.
At that time, the people of "Rosh from the North" will seize the opportunity to quickly invade Israel. Rosh and the nations with her will be utterly destroyed by God. In other words, these nations will have no part in the battle of Armageddon; they have already been defeated. It is my guess at the Antichrist is the one who engages these nations in battle and destroys them.
In the rest of Ezekiel 38-39, God describes his destruction on Gog and Magog. We see in these verses what seems to eerily describe a nuclear holocaust. Fire and brimstone fall from the sky. The earth shakes. The faces of the invading soldiers melt like hot wax. It takes Israel seven years to decontaminate the land. The burial of radiation-contaminated men and women injures even more.

Thousands of invading soldiers lie unburied. God sends the birds of the air to pluck the flesh right off their bodies.
This sounds just like the grisly feast of God in Revelation 19 at the Battle of Armageddon.
The Antichrist uses this move by Russia against Israel to set up the Abomination of Desolation and move his forces into Israel. The nations which comprise the land area of the old Roman Empire include England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Greece, Macedonia, Belgium, and the Netherlands, among others.

4. Rise of the Antichrist

Daniel 11:36-45: 3 ½ years into the final seven-year period the Antichrist places what Jesus called the Abomination of Desolation in the holy place in the temple in Jerusalem. This is a small statue of the Antichrist which comes alive and desecrates the place of sacrifice.
The Abomination of Desolation compels Jews to worship the Antichrist. This is crucial to his plan for world dictatorship.
Jesus said, "When you see the Abomination of Desolation spoken of by Daniel the Prophet set up in the Holy place, Run! ...Woe if you are pregnant. Run away as fast as you can." The Antichrist demands to be worshiped and brands all of his followers with the number 666. John tells us that those who will worship the Antichrist and take the number will avoid economic sanctions but will be doomed to hell. Those who refuse to take the number and won't follow or worship the beast will be put to death as martyrs.
In the middle of Tribulation, Satan is cast from Heaven and personally indwells the Antichrist. The Great Tribulation (the final 3 ½ years) has begun.
The rest of Daniel 11 describes a massive battle between the king of the North and the King of the South. The king of the North is obviously the Antichrist and the King of the South refers to an Arab-African Confederacy.
The battles are intense with the King of the South initially victorious. But the Antichrist builds a massive army and moves into Israel and utterly defeats the King of the South and his forces.
The Antichrist is in full control of Israel, killing Christians and Jews quickly and mercilessly. Then, tidings from the East warn the Antichrist of a gigantic invasion of the Kings of East which comprise an army of 200 million soldiers. In Revelation 9 the Euphrates River impedes the movement of the Kings from East. This is the sixth trumpet.

In Revelation 16 the sixth cup of God's wrath is poured out as the Euphrates dries up and allows the Kings of the East to March into Israel to battle with the Antichrist.
"Tidings from the North" refers to Russia restored which then returns for a second time to invade Israel.
At this point all the armies move into the Middle-East and spread out along the entire length and breadth of Israel, with the greatest concentration poised for the fiercest and final battle on the Plains of Armageddon.

5. The Climax of Battle of Armageddon Described

Some feel that these verses are descriptive, poetic pictures of Armageddon. I am taking the literal position here.
The islands flee away. God rearranges the surface of the earth. Just as Africa, Europe, South America, and North America used to be one land mass, God will speed up the process and change it all.
The mountains will not be found. This would indicate a complete renovation of the earth, which may be a fulfillment of 2 Peter 3:10, which predicts that the entire earth will be destroyed and "the elements shall melt with fervent heat: the earth and also the works that are in it, shall be burned up."
While this great battle is raging, every city in the world is going to be leveled. This will take place by what is called an "earthquake" (seismos in the Greek), but that's not the only meaning. The word itself simply means "a great shaking of the earth." The earth could be shaken either by a literal earthquake or by a full-scale nuclear exchange.
Just think of the great cities of the world: London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Tokyo... all of these great cities are going to be judged at that time!

6. The Second Coming of Jesus

Jesus sets foot on the Mount of Olives and a great Earthquake takes place which splits Israel from East to West and brings water from the Mediterranean Sea all the way to Jerusalem. By the way, there is a fault line that runs from the Mount of Olives all the way to the Mediterranean Sea...
Jesus then enters the fray and destroys the forces of the Antichrist, the King of the East and the king of the North as recorded in Zechariah 14:12-13:
"This is the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another."

For hundreds of years, students of Bible prophecy have wondered what kind of plague could produce such instant ravaging of humans while still on their feet. Until the advent of the atomic bomb such a thing was not humanly possible. But now everything Zechariah predicted could come true instantly in a thermonuclear exchange.
At the Second Coming, the nonbelieving Jews of Israel will see the nail prints in Jesus's hands, feet, and side and realize that they crucified their Messiah. It will break their hearts:
Zechariah 12:10: "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son."

7. The Two Suppers of God at the End of Time

The Supper of God -- Revelation 19:17-18: "And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, 'Come, gather together for the great supper of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small.'"
The Wedding Supper of the Lamb -- Revelation 19:9: Then the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” This is the marriage feast when Jesus, as the Bridegroom, takes His church for His Bride. It is a tremendous time of fellowship and praise!
There is a telling word picture here and we all have a choice: We can enjoy the wedding supper with Jesus or we can be the supper.
Revelation 20 and 21 wrap up the story with the destruction of Satan and his followers, the 1000-year reign of Christ on Earth (the Millennium), and the new Heaven and the new Earth which are designed for eternity.
Well, Christopher, I hope this gives you some insight into the battle of Armageddon and to the extra material beyond your question that you may find helpful.
May God bless you in your studies of the Book of Revelation and please remember that God promises a blessing for those who read it often. Sincerely, Roger

No Turning Back, No Turning Back
By Mike Pohlman

No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. -- Luke 9:62
I love the old spiritual, “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus.” I hear in it the echo of Luke 9:62. Listen, for example, to the third stanza: “The world behind me, the cross before me. No turning back, no turning back.”
In this simple song we see a profound biblical truth: the Christian life is a constant movement forward to our heavenly home. We are not called to retreat in the face of the many spiritual battles that will crusade against us. We are called to advance in godliness—come what may.
I’ve been indulging lately in a wonderful biography of Ulysses S. Grant by Jean Edward Smith. One theme that persists in Grant’s career as a general was his constant movement forward. Grant, in other words, was always on the offensive. His battle strategy was not to “dig in” and fight a defensive war. He was on the march, pressing the Confederacy into submission. Grant’s persistence—his stubborn determination to move forward and not look back—was summed up succinctly by Abraham Lincoln when he said in response to calls for Grant’s removal in early 1862: “I cannot spare this man; he fights.”
As the sun was setting on the Apostle Paul’s ministry he wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Unlike Grant, Paul’s fight was not against flesh and blood, “but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). But like Grant, Paul left no room for retreat. His life was marked by a steady, determined, rugged movement forward. Consider this astounding example from Acts 14:
But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe. When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed (19-23).
Paul was “struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:9). After being stoned and left for dead, he got up and moved forward. “But one thing I do,” Paul said, “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14).
I’m reminded of one of the most moving passages in Smith’s biography of Grant describing an episode after the first day of fighting at Shiloh leaving Grant’s army on the brink of defeat:
Later, sometime after midnight, raining harder now, Sherman went looking for Grant. He had worked five hours to prepare his division to attack, but it seemed hopeless. His men had been thoroughly beaten and Sherman—who would have been the last to say so—thought it important “to put the river between us and the enemy.” This is why he sought Grant, to see when and how the retreat could be arranged. The rain was coming down in buckets, punctuated by heavy thunder and lightning in the background. In this surreal setting Sherman found Grant standing alone under a large oak tree, dripping wet, hat slouched down over his face, coat collar up around his ears, a dimly glowing lantern in his hand, cigar clenched between his teeth. Sherman looked at him for a moment from a distance. Then, “moved” as he put it later, “by some wise and sudden instinct not to mention retreat,” Sherman approached and said, “Well, Grant, we’ve had the devil’s own day, haven’t we?”
“Yes,” answered Grant, puffing hard on his cigar. “Yes. Lick’em tomorrow though.”
Which of us has not experienced a crushing defeat in the Christian life? Against the constant bombardment of the world, the flesh, and the devil we battle everyday to believe the promises of God held out for us in the Gospel. And, if we’re honest, some days we don’t feel like we’re winning at all. In fact, some days defeat feels certain.
But arrayed in the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-20) we get up by grace ready to “lick’em tomorrow.” We remind ourselves that God in Christ “always leads us in triumphal procession” (2 Corinthians 2:14) “so that [we] may not grow weary or fainthearted” (Hebrews 12:3).
Intersecting Faith & Life: What promises of God can you cling to right now as you face particular challenges in your life?

Who Is the Antichrist and What Will His Rise Look Like?

Who Is the Antichrist and What Will His Rise Look Like?

To better understand the person of the antichrist, you can begin by reading Revelation 13:1-4. As you read, ask God to help you understand His Word (Psalms 119:73).
In this Scripture passage, we witness the rise of the antichrist, who will come into great power during the tribulation period. With your Bible still accessible, consider the following insights on the biblical text, verse by verse. The below points about the antichrist will help us understand what he is, what he will do, signs and events around his rise to power, and ultimately his goal.

What and Who Is the Antichrist?

1. A beast - I saw a beast rising out of the sea (13:1): Revelation pictures the antichrist as a beast 32 times. The image points to the brutal, bloody, uncontrolled, and wild character of this diabolical dictator. It also contrasts the antichrist from Christ, who is most commonly called the Lamb. The Lamb saves sinners, but the beast persecutes and executes the saints. The Lamb is gentle, whereas the beast is ferocious. The Lamb is loving, but the beast is heartless and cruel.
2. A Gentile - This beast "rises out of the sea" - The sea refers to the Gentile nations (Revelation 17:15), indicating that the antichrist will be a Gentile. “Anti” can mean “instead of ” or “against” or “opposed to.” So “antichrist” can mean “instead of Christ,” “against Christ,” or “opposed to Christ.” The antichrist is the “man of lawlessness,” the “son of destruction,” who will lead the world into rebellion against God (2 Thessalonians 2:3-10Revelation 11:7) and deceive multitudes (Revelation 19:20).
3. Great Power - "With ten horns and seven heads" (13:1): We have seen that because animals use horns as weapons (Genesis 22:13Psalms 69:31), horns eventually became symbols of power and then of dominion, representing kingdoms and kings.
4. Roman Revival - Comparing this text with Daniel 7:16-24, we conclude that the antichrist will rise up from ten kingdoms that will constitute a revived Roman Empire, the final form of Gentile world power before Christ returns.
Some Bible expositors say the seven heads are the principal rulers of the antichrist’s revived Roman Empire. Others suggest that the seven heads may be successive world empires — Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and the antichrist’s revived Roman Empire. Still others say the seven heads represent seven mountains (Revelation 17:9). A mountain can symbolize a kingdom (see Daniel 2:34-45). This may be a veiled reference to Rome, which was built on seven hills (Revelation 17:18). All these views support the idea that antichrist’s kingdom will be a revived Roman Empire.
5. Global Power - "With ten diadems on its horns" (13:1): The ten diadems, or crowns, point to the dominion of the antichrist’s kingdom, which will eventually embrace the entire globe.
6. Will Blaspheme - "and blasphemous names on its heads" (13:1): These point to the antichrist’s character — he will have a mouth full of blasphemy (Revelation 13:5-6) and will exalt himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped (2 Thessalonians 2:4).
7. Great Army - "The beast was like a leopard" (13:2): Much of the imagery in this verse is from Daniel 7. The leopard was known for swiftness, cunning, and agility (see Daniel 7:6). This imagery in Daniel represents Greece under Alexander the Great, which had a swift, cunning, and agile army. Such will be the case with the antichrist as he comes into world dominion.
8. Fierce - "its feet were like a bear’s" (13:2): The bear in Daniel’s account refers to Medo-Persia (Daniel 7:5), well known for its strength and fierceness in battle (Isaiah 13:17-18). Such strength and fierceness will certainly characterize the antichrist and his forces.
9. Powerful Words - "Its mouth was like a lion’s" (13:2): The lion in Daniel’s account refers to Babylon (Daniel 7:4), with lion-like qualities of power and strength. Babylon was known for its ability to move quickly (like a lion). Such qualities will characterize the antichrist.
A comparison of Revelation 13:2 with Daniel 7 reveals that the final world empire of the antichrist — a revived Roman Empire — will be rooted in all the previous empires. It will unite in a single kingdom the evil and power that characterized all the previous kingdoms.
10. Satan - "To it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority" (13:2): The ultimate source of the antichrist’s power is Satan.
11. Resurrected Dead? - "Seemed to have a mortal wound" (13:3): Some Bible expositors believe this mortal wound refers to the pagan Roman Empire, which died in the past but will be revived in the end times. Others say a historical character of the past, such as Nero, Judas Iscariot, Mussolini, Hitler, or Stalin, will come back to life and fulfill the role of the antichrist in the end times. Others say the antichrist will actually be killed and then resurrected. Still others say that perhaps the antichrist will be severely wounded, and Satan will supernaturally heal this wound. Perhaps he will simply appear to be killed, though he really is not, and through satanic trickery will appear to be resurrected.
The revived Roman Empire view seems unfeasible because Revelation 13:12 specifically refers to “the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed.” The “first beast” is the antichrist. Then, in Revelation 13:14, we find a parallel reference to “the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived.” This verse is interpreted most naturally as referring to a person — not a reincarnation of a past person, but a unique anti-God person of the future.
It is unlikely that the antichrist will actually be resurrected, but he may give the appearance of having been resurrected. Satan has supernatural abilities (John 12:312 Corinthians 4:4Ephesians 2:2), but he is not powerful enough to resurrect people from the dead. Only God can create life (Genesis 1:1Genesis 1:21Deuteronomy 32:39); the devil cannot (see Exodus 8:19). The devil has great power to deceive people (Revelation 12:9). He is a master magician and a super-scientist.
With his vast knowledge of God, man, and the universe, he is able to perform counterfeit miracles (2 Thessalonians 2:9). Some theologians believe Satan may be able to perform limited “grade-B” miracles. But only God can perform “grade-A” miracles. Only God can fully control and supersede the natural laws He Himself created. Satan will likely engage in a grade-B miracle in healing the wounded (but not dead) antichrist or engage in some kind of masterful deception, or perhaps a combination of both. In any event, the antichrist will appear to be resurrected from the dead. 2 Corinthians 4:4 informs us that Satan can blind peoples’ minds. If Satan pulls off some kind of counterfeit resurrection, he may blind people’s minds so that they accept this as an indication of the antichrist’s power and deity and subsequently worship him.
If the antichrist only appears to be dead but is not genuinely dead, a scenario suggested by Bible scholar Walter Price becomes viable: The apostle Paul was stoned in Lystra, and the citizens “dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead” (Acts 14:19). While in an unconscious state, Paul “was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter” (2 Corinthians 12:4)... At the same time, he was thought to be dead, his spirit was caught up into the third heaven and there received a profound revelation from God. This same thing, in reverse, will happen to the Antichrist. The Antichrist...will be no more dead than was the apostle Paul. But just as the citizens of Lystra thought Paul was dead, so the Antichrist will be thought dead.Just as Paul’s spirit departed from his body and was taken to heaven, where he received further revelations, so the antichrist’s spirit may depart from his body and be taken into the abyss, where Satan will offer the world’s kingdoms to him. The antichrist’s spirit will then return from the abyss (Revelation 11:7), re-enter what appears to be a dead body, and thereby give the appearance of a resurrection from the dead. Mark Hitchcock suggests that while his spirit is in the abyss, the “Antichrist probably receives his orders and strategy from Satan, literally selling his soul to the devil, and then comes back to earth with hellish ferocity to establish his world domination over a completely awestruck earth.”2
12. World-Wide Attention - "The whole earth marveled as they followed the beast" (13:3): This event will no doubt make headlines around the world. Internet videos of the event will go viral. Television reports of the event will be shown around the clock.
13. Worshipped - "They worshiped the dragon" (13:4): During Christ’s three-year ministry, Satan tried to persuade Him to fall down and worship him (Matthew 4:9). Before that, Lucifer (Satan’s original name) sought to put himself in the place of God (see Isaiah 14:12-17Ezekiel 28:11-19). Satan will finally have what he has yearned for—worship. They worshiped the beast... "Who is like the beast?” (13:4): This contrasts with believers, who say to God, “Who is like you, O Lord?” (Exodus 15:11).

Major Characteristics of the Antichrist

1. The genius of the antichrist. Scripture reveals that the antichrist will be a genius in intellect (Daniel 8:23), commerce (Daniel 11:43Revelation 13:16-17), war (Revelation 6:2Revelation 13:2), speech (Daniel 11:36), and politics (Revelation 17:11-12).
2. The antichrist mimics Christ. Christ is God (John 1:1-2John 10:36), and the antichrist will claim to be God (2 Thessalonians 2:4). Christ did miracles (Matthew 9:32-33Mark 6:2); the antichrist will mimic such miracles (Matthew 24:242 Thessalonians 2:9). Christ is crowned with many crowns (Revelation 19:12); the antichrist is crowned with ten crowns (Revelation 13:1). Christ rides a white horse (Revelation 19:11) as does the antichrist (Revelation 6:2). Christ was resurrected (Matthew 28:6); the antichrist will appear to be resurrected (Revelation 13:3-14). Christ is a member of the holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14), but the antichrist is a member of an unholy trinity—Satan, the antichrist, and the false prophet (Revelation 13).

Giving Thanks

Giving Thanks

 Streams in the Desert

Giving thanks always for all things unto God (Ephesians 5:20).

No matter what the source of the evil, if you are in God and surrounded by Him as by an atmosphere, all evil has to pass through Him before it comes to you. Therefore you can thank God for everything that comes, not for the sin of it, but for what God will bring out of it and through it. May God make our lives thanksgiving and perpetual praise, then He will make everything a blessing.
We once saw a man draw some black dots. We looked and could make nothing of them but an irregular assemblage of black dots. Then he drew a few lines, put in a few rests, then a clef at the beginning, and we saw these black dots were musical notes. On sounding them we were singing,
"Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below."
There are many black dots and black spots in our lives, and we cannot understand why they are there or why God permitted them to come. But if we let God come into our lives, and adjust the dots in the proper way, and draw the lines He wants, and separate this from that, and put in the rests at the proper places; out of the black dots and spots in our lives He will make a glorious harmony.
Let us not hinder Him in this glorious work!

Would we know that the major chords were sweet,
If there were no minor key?
Would the painter's work be fair to our eyes,
Without shade on land or sea?
Would we know the meaning of happiness,
Would we feel that the day was bright,
If we'd never known what it was to grieve,
Nor gazed on the dark of night?
Many men owe the grandeur of their lives to their tremendous difficulties.
--C. H. Spurgeon
When the musician presses the black keys on the great organ, the music is as sweet as when he touches the white ones, but to get the capacity of the instrument he must touch them all.

The Basis for Discernment.....Dr. Charles Stanley

The Basis for Discernment
Dr. Charles Stanley
Since spiritual discernment is the ability to see life from God's perspective, it requires that we know how He thinks and acts. The Bible is His unchanging, infallible revelation of Himself. However, the Lord doesn't simply give us a list of facts about His character and ways. All throughout the pages of Scripture, He illustrates who He is and how He operates.
Although the Bible is ancient, it's not a dead book. It's alive and as fresh as if He were speaking directly to you. The stories may have taken place centuries ago, but the principles and applications are current and relevant. It's our instruction book about how to live. Guidance for decisions and discernment about situations are found from Genesis to Revelation.
God's Word is active and piercing. The words don't simply sit on the page. They penetrate our hearts and judge our thoughts and motives. This convicting quality is why some people don't like to read the Bible. But self-discernment is essential if we don't want to keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Some Christians live on a surface level, never understanding why they react to situations the way they do. But if we'll approach the Word of God with an open spirit, it will bring to light our hidden motives and reveal unrecognized sins.
Spiritual discernment involves seeing not just our circumstances but also ourselves from God's perspective. Have you learned to embrace the piercing sword of Scripture, or have you avoided doing so because it makes you uncomfortable? Remember, God's Word cuts only so that it can heal.

When You Feel Like Giving Up

When You Feel Like Giving Up
SHARON JAYNES
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV)
Have you ever felt like you just wanted to quit? Have you felt the ache in your spiritual legs, the weakening of your once-strong heart, the smoldering of the fire in your belly? I certainly have. I’ve also realized how many around me feel the same way.
I was at a cross country race pondering my discouragement when my sister-in-law picked up her megaphone. She wasn’t cheering for me, but her son, Stu.
Seventy anxious young men stood poised at the starting line. When the shot fired, the herd of boys began their 3.1-mile run through the woods. As soon as Stu’s foot left the starting position, Pat began to yell through her megaphone.
“GO, STU!” she cheered — not once, but at 10-second intervals. When he was out of sight, she ran to another spot along the winding trail where the runners would eventually pass. Even though the boys were nowhere in sight, Pat continued to cheer, “GO, STU!”
When I questioned whether or not he could hear her, she replied, “I don’t know if he can hear me or not, but if there’s a chance he can, I want him to hear my voice cheering him on.” So, for 16 minutes, she continued to pump courage and confidence into her son’s heart.
After the race, I asked Stu, “When you are running through the woods, can you hear your mother cheering for you?”
“Oh, yes,” he answered with a chuckle. “I can hear her the whole way.”
“And what does that do for you?” I inquired.
“It makes me not want to quit,” he replied.
“When my legs ache and lungs burn, when I feel like I’m about to get sick, I hear my mom’s voice cheering for me, and it makes me not want to stop.”
The Bible tells us, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Can’t you see that cloud of witnesses on the sidelines? “You go, girl! Don’t give up! Keep on running! Focus on the finish line!” They are cheering for YOU.
And get this … Jesus is praying for you! Romans 8:34b says, “Christ Jesus who died — more than that, who was raised to life — is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (NIV). It doesn’t get any better than that.
I learned a few facts about foot racing once. As you near the end of a race, your throat burns, your legs ache, and your whole body cries out for you to stop. That’s when family, friends and fans are the most valuable. Their encouragement helps you push through the pain to the finish.
And that’s the power of a woman’s words to encourage someone else to keep running. That’s the power of your words. An uplifting word, offered at the right moment, might make the difference between someone finishing well or collapsing along the way.
Heavenly Father, I’ll admit, sometimes I feel like the race is just too hard for me. Help me remember the cloud of witnesses cheering for me to keep my focus on the finish line. Thank You for Jesus, who lives to intercede for me daily. Help me to be a conduit of encouragement for those running the race with me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
TRUTH FOR TODAY:
1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (NIV)
Hebrews 3:13, “But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.” (CSB)
