Are there not some in your circle to whom you naturally betake yourself in times of trial and sorrow? They always seem to speak the right word, to give the very counsel you are longing for; you do not realize, however, the cost which they had to pay ere they became so skillful in binding up the gaping wounds and drying tears. But if you were to investigate their past history you would find that they have suffered more than most. They have watched the slow untwisting of some silver cord on which the lamp of life hung. They have seen the golden bowl of joy dashed to their feet, and its contents spilt. They have stood by ebbing tides, and drooping gourds, and noon sunsets; but all this has been necessary to make them the nurses, the physicians, the priests of men. The boxes that come from foreign climes are clumsy enough; but they contain spices which scent the air with the fragrance of the Orient. 1 Corinthians 2:6-16

After exposing the futility of worldly thinking in 1 Corinthians 1, Paul introduces Christians to the higher realm of godly wisdom. This kind of knowledge and understanding isn't available through human intelligence and reasoning; it comes strictly through divine revelation. Only those indwelt by God's Spirit have "the mind of Christ" (v. 16) and access to "the things freely given" to them by God (v. 12).

Without this supernatural insight, no one can accurately know the Lord or His ways. Many people say they believe in God yet may not have a correct understanding of Him because their perceptions are based on their own thoughts and ideas. It's easier to custom-design a god to fit our preferences than to make the required adjustments that worship of the one true God demands.

Even believers need to guard against trying to fit God into their preconceived image of Him. The Bible is the only reliable source of divine revelation, but we must be careful to consider the Scriptures as a whole—it's critical that we don't just pick and choose the verses we want to believe. For example, by focusing only on passages that emphasize the Lord's lovingkindness while excluding those that speak of His holiness and justice, we misunderstand His true nature.

Let's seek to know the Lord in truth by considering the entire counsel of Scripture. Divine wisdom is available to every believer through the Holy Spirit, who searches the depths of God. May we never try to limit Him to fit our preferences. Instead, may He enlarge our minds to embrace His thoughts.

Before I even have my first cup of coffee most mornings, the mental battle begins. Lies bombard me with scripts that don’t line up with truth and drag my mood down before I’m even given a fair shot to enjoy this new day.

The mess that was left in my kitchen the night before will turn into an entire mental dialogue about how disrespected I am and how inconsiderate and uncaring my people are. The truth is, my people care deeply about me, but they are sometimes forgetful when they’re up playing family games or having late-night chats.

I wish my first inclination wasn’t to personalize those dirty dishes, but the lies are loud and so convincing sometimes. I’ll make a snarky comment out of frustration, which just sets the completely opposite tone in my home than what I really want. Then the guilt of my morning annoyance turns into lies about myself because I should be more patient and understanding.

And it’s not just in my kitchen. The more I entertain the lies, the heavier my heart feels all day long. It’s no longer just about the dishes and the comments I made that morning. Those lies quickly tap into the deeper wounds of my heart and deeper insecurities I have as a wife and a mother. Without even realizing it, those lies begin to inform my beliefs and steal my peace. The danger is that lies don’t just pass through our thoughts. Lies ravage our beliefs.

Lies, unattended to, affect the perceptions we form. The perceptions we form eventually become the beliefs we carry. The beliefs we carry determine what we see. That’s why we must be so careful to recognize where lies are affecting us. Our faith can get fractured by the lies we let inform our beliefs.

I’ve come to realize that what makes faith fall apart isn’t doubt. It’s being too certain of the wrong things.

The wrong things I’m tempted to believe can be:

“It will never get better.”

“My life will never be good again.”

“God won’t forgive me.”

“I can’t forgive them.”

“I won’t be able to get over this.”

“God doesn’t care.”

Instead of letting those defeating lies take over my emotions and dictate my reactions, I’ve learned to see them as warning signals. When I have a thought that is especially negative or condemning of myself or others, I pause to consider, “Is this really true?” And what I’m discovering is that most of the time the answer is, “No, it’s not.”

The Bible, while inspirational, is also very applicable. And when we turn to God’s Word to know what to do with the thoughts and lies causing commotion in our minds, we can begin the work of transforming those first moments in the morning to holy moments. And then we can set a better pattern for all the other thoughts we have the rest of the day.

In the book of Philippians, we find Paul in prison writing to the church of Philippi. If there were ever a perfect situation for someone to start believing the wrong things about themselves, their people and God, it’s Paul writing a letter from prison. But he doesn’t waver. And in his closing words of Philippians 4, Paul addresses our thought-life as Christians:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

Right. Pure. Lovely. Admirable. Praiseworthy. Those are the things to think about, and not just because they’re a delightful and fun break from the lies we like to explore.

In the very next verse, Paul tells us what is promised to us when we think about such things: “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (v. 9, NIV).

The peace of God. That is what I really long for.

Friend, rather than giving space to any lies that are trying to come in and set up camp in your mind today, remember that God has given instructions for a better place to park our thoughts. This doesn’t mean we deny ourselves processing hard things or complicated relational struggles, but it does mean we stay clear-headed enough to untangle any lies compounding the issues so we can tackle them with truth.

When we set our minds on the things of God, we will have direct and immediate access to the peace of God.

God, help me untangle any lie I’m believing and replace it with Your life-giving truth. Help me set my mind on things that are of You: Pure. Lovely. Admirable. Praiseworthy. Lies are damaging and defeating, so I will not allow them to hijack my mind or hinder my heart. With Your powerful truth in me, I am set free. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

 The Amazing Reality of Who We Are Now Because of Jesus

One of the incredible results of Jesus’ resurrection is that God makes believers into completely brand new creations.

The Bible says we are completely new creations – we aren’t simply reformed or refurbished. We’re brand new.

We aren’t just the same old people who have now made resolutions to change or improve. It’s not like Jesus bought an old piece of beat up dirty furniture in a junkyard, washed it off, and is now beginning to sand it and polish it up.

No. That decrepit rotten piece of junk is gone. It no longer exists. Now there is a brand spanking new, beautiful creation in its place. God tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

When God saves us, he not only washes all our sins away, but he joins us to Christ. He makes us one with Christ. When God looks at us he sees Christ. When he looks at Christ, he sees us in him.

We arent just refurbished old creations – we are completely NEW.

We are nothing like we were before. We are NEW creations in Christ. We have to remember this – the old has passed away. It’s gone. The new has come.

But we don’t always feel like new creations. When I first prayed to receive Christ, I expected fireworks or goosebumps, but didn’t feel any different. I still felt like the old me. I still felt tempted to sin. I didn’t realize that for right now, while we are still in these earthly bodies, we can still be tempted to sin. We will still have desires and cravings from what remains of our sin nature in our bodies.

But we ARE new. Whether we feel like it or not.

We must believe God’s word. Early in my Christian life, I felt like it would be impossible for me not to sin. Then I heard someone teach that believers are no longer slaves of sin. As it says in Romans 6:12-14:

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Did you catch that? Sin will have NO DOMINION OVER YOU!

And why not? Because we are no longer under law but under a whole new system – we are under grace. We are new creations, no longer enslaved to sin, no longer under its dominion. We don’t have to sin. We don’t have to obey it’s urges, no matter how strong they feel.

God isn’t simply refurbishing the old us. He has created us anew and is shaping us more and more into the likeness of his Son:

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.-2 Cor 3:18

We are new creations, and God is taking us from one degree of Christ’s glory to another. We are one with Christ, and God makes us more and more like him every day.

This is incredible! Even the highest seraphim in heaven cant claim to be new creations.

The angels around the throne aren’t being transformed into the likeness of Christ. The most glorious angels have not been adopted by God as sons and daughters. They can’t call God “Father” like we can. And they are not one with Christ the way we are.

When God gave Isaiah a glimpse of his glory, he saw the seraphim:

Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.Isaiah 6:2

These glorious heavenly beings who had never sinned had to cover their faces – they could not look upon the infinite glory of God.

Yet look what God says we will experience:

Beloved, we are Gods children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.- 1John 3:2

We are now God’s children, and someday, we shall be like Jesus – clothed in his glory, and we shall see him as he is!

We shall gaze directly upon the face of Jesus Christ in all his infinite radiant glory.

And we will never grow tired of taking in his beauty, because his beauty is infinite. For all eternity he will show us new, amazing, astounding, breathtaking, mind-blowing, vistas of his glory and majesty.

Why? Because Jesus died for us, then rose from the dead to make us who believe in him into new creations.

Someday we all will die unless Jesus comes back first. But because Jesus rose from the dead, believers will rise from the dead. We will have new glorious heavenly bodies. We will be like Jesus and see him as he is. In the meantime, though we live in this dying world, WE are right now, new creations. We have imperishable, everlasting life. The old is gone, the new has come. Jesus isn’t just sanding and polishing up the old you. You are a brand new you.

The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? …For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock … I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.  - Psalm 27:1,5,13-14

Sorry, there's no catchy intro for today's devotional. No special personal story to tease. No witty comments to keep you invested. Just some raw and unrefined honesty. And here it is:

I am afraid.

Yes, I am afraid. Perhaps it's a result of spending too much time watching cable news in the past week or so. Or maybe it's due to the fact that so many friends and family and acquaintances of mine are experiencing hard times right now as well: job loss, illnesses, marital failures, devastating sin issues, home foreclosures and on and on.

I confess that I have found myself mired in the hopelessness and despair of it all. And I am sad and feel very small. Does anything really matter any more? Is my witness making a difference? Is God really in control of all of this? Does he care? And is the world just going to crash and burn anyway?

I know that this is where the enemy wants to keep me: stuck in my fear with emotions and dismal circumstances blurring my vision. He doesn't want me to remember that I have a lifeline—the hope for eternity that is found in God's Word.

But ha! on the enemy. That's where I'm going right now, and I'm taking you with me. Let's take this fear, measure it against Truth and see what the Great I Am, the Alpha and the Omega and our Jehovah-jireh has to say:

The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you (Psalm 9:9-10). Yes, I will seek the One who is secure and offers me protection! He is my safe place.

"Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me (Psalm 50:15). Yes, I will cry out to the Lord! Help me, my great Protector! You are worthy to be praised!

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe (Prov. 18:10). Yes, he is my mighty and unfailing fortress! Of whom shall I be afraid?

You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal (Isa. 26:3-4). Yes, I will meditate on the Truth found in God's Word! I will think on the eternal, unchangeable God and not what I see happening around me. His perfect peace is available to me!

Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God (Isa. 50:10). Yes, I will trust in my God as I obey what he is asking me to do! He is all I need to guide me when life is confusing and my way is not clear.

I know I can't be the only one who has been "sore afraid" as of late. And perhaps these verses will encourage you today as well. When we focus on the Lord instead of whatever or whomever makes us afraid, we can be confident in he who is our light and our salvation and the stronghold of our lives.

Intersecting Faith & Life: Are you afraid? What is causing you to forget who God is and how he has provided—and will continue to provide—in your life? Spend some time meditating on Psalm 23, and remember that the Lord is the great shepherd of the sheep and that HE is watching over you!

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” - John 10:10

We’ve heard it all before. The enemy comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. His entire life’s mission is to steal our joy, destroy our souls, and kill our bodies, ruining our chance at eternity with our Creator.

When I take a minute to think about what this looks like in my life, I’m met with immense overwhelm. I let random and unimportant life situations steal more joy than I’m happy to admit. I have been tempted to partake in activities that could ultimately destroy my soul. I pray against the enemy’s schemes daily, because I know how susceptible I am to his tricks.

Think about it: Your eyes burst open from the depths of a deep slumber. You were in the midst of an intense dream. You can tell by the rapid beat of your heart and the sweat on your brow. You try to get settled back into bed, praying for slumber to return, only to wrestle your pillow for a few hours. Then when you’re finally back asleep, your alarm blares in your ear reminding you of the busy day ahead.

As you continue through your morning, you run out of toothpaste because you forgot to stop at the store last night. “Grrr…today is going to be great” you sneer to the mirror, your words dripping with sarcasm. As you make your way to the car, your shoe breaks, forcing you to turn around and change, wasting more time. Then, as you’re driving, someone cuts you off, almost causing an accident. By this point, you are fuming. The way in which your morning has gone has now become an assumptive prediction of the way the rest of the day will unfold. You muddle through the day getting more frustrated with every passing hour. Nothing is going your way.

We’ve all been there. Overwhelmed by a barrage of poorly timed frustrations.

But… are they really poorly timed? Is it truly a coincidence? Or are we allowing the enemy to grab hold of the slightest piece of our heart, leading to an entire day of enemy strongholds?

When we willingly hand the enemy the tiniest snippet of our joy it can quickly become a breeding ground of discontent, which leads to a disconnect from our Father.

Jesus’ words in John 10:10 tell us that the enemy is real. The enemy is on the move. The enemy wants us. He wants to distract us with trivial things that seem anything but trivial in the moment so that he can continue to have one foot in the door of our lives.

Jesus, however, comes to give us life. He doesn’t stop there, though. Not only does Jesus come to give us life, but rather life “more abundantly.” How beautiful a picture does that paint? Our Father loves us so much that He doesn’t want us to just have life, but He wants to overflow His abundance upon us.

What would it look like to have an abundance of the life He intended for us to live? I can promise you that those days where nothing is going your way, surely are not what He has in mind!

What are you allowing the enemy to steal, kill, or destroy?

Let’s pray.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you. Thank you for loving me so much that you want me to have an abundant life. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me. Thank you for informing me of the enemy’s tactics and tricks. Thank you for the protection from the stealing and killing and destroying, the enemy tries to hurl my way.

Lord, I pray fervently that you open my eyes to the tricks of the enemy. Allow me to walk through today with a discerning heart, as I traverse the mundane details of this earthly life. I pray that you never allow these lessons to be wasted. Remind me when I fall victim to the days where nothing is going my way, that I need only YOU. I surrender my attitude to you, Lord. I surrender my thoughts that say, “nothing is going my way.”

I willingly exchange the enemy’s attempt at death and destruction with your abundant and free-flowing life. Guide me today and every day and continue to remind me who I am.

In your matchless name, I pray.

I read somewhere that in a recent Christmas season Americans used 28 million rolls of wrapping paper and 17 million packages of tags and bows, sent out 372 million greeting cards, and set up 35 million Christmas trees.

Some of our Christmas traditions are just that, traditions. Jesus was probably not born on December 25, for example. And the Christmas tree is based on the celebration of the reincarnation of Nimrod. The ancient Babylonians burned a “Yule” log (the Chaldean word for infant) in the fireplace, and the next day a symbolic evergreen tree was placed inside the house.

This pagan ritual is hinted at in the Bible, in Jeremiah 10:1-4. But before you get worried, I want you to know that if you come to my church, you’ll find a very large Christmas tree in the foyer! And you know what? Most people born in this country don’t know the origins of these things, and we aren’t worshiping Babylonian gods and goddesses. It’s not about that. (And it’s good to remember that Martin Luther was the first guy to put a Christmas tree inside the home.)

At the same time, what are we to do with some of these traditions? Let’s look at what Jesus did when He was faced with a festival that had a lot of tradition, some of which may have been true and some not. In John chapter 10, He was in the temple for the Feast of Dedication, also known as the Festival of Lights, or Hanukkah. You won’t find it in the Bible anywhere; it dates from the period between Old and New Testaments. But Jesus was celebrating Hanukkah, and He used the Festival of Lights to shine the light on who He really is (John 10:22-30).

And I suggest that’s what we do with Christmas. You can say, “Bah, humbug!” You can get “Santa Claustrophobic.” You can run from it. Or you can use it to shine the light on who Jesus really is.

People are singing the words we preach in evangelical churches every week: Christ by highest heaven adored, Christ the everlasting Lord. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see! Hail, incarnate deity! Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel. Hark, the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn king!”

At least some of them don’t know what they’re singing, but that’s where we come in. We can redeem it by reminding them. Does it matter when He came? No, it matters THAT He came. Since the celebration is already ongoing, I say let’s use it to remind them of Him.
